My favourite cords and thread for macrame and where I buy them.

This week I want to share a few of my favourite places that I buy some of my materials for macrame from. I use different materials for different purposes within macrame, all depending on the look I want to achieve. The first type of cord that I want to touch upon is satin cord. I really like using this cord when doing regular macrame because I like the elegant look it can give the final piece of jewellery, and also it is a strong and durable material which is also very important for the quality and longevity of the pieces as I believe the quality is just as important as the design. Satin cord can be bought in many different places and for varying prices and quality. I buy mine from a couple of different places. One of my favourite places to buy it is on eBay, because the value for money is he best I have found without compromising on quality. I buy it on 70m spools and they range across different sizes and colours. The prices for these 70m spools range between £3-5 with free delivery, which I think is a great price. And I personally really like the quality of it. The only downside is that it gets shipped from China, which means that delivery time takes quite a while. Normally a few weeks in my case, but I think it is well worth the wait. I just try and plan ahead to make sure I don’t run out in the mean time.

I also buy my satin cord from a wholesaler which is placed back home in Denmark where I come from. So every time I visit my family that is a must visit place for me. They also have an online shop which is gradually expanding. It is great to buy from there as the quality is great and the more you buy the cheaper it is. The satin cord from them comes on 25m spools, for wholesale prices. And they also have loads of other goodies. We can spend hours in that shop when I am home to visit.

The next type of cord I like to use for macrame is a nylon cord. It is about 0.8mm in thickness and I also buy this on eBay. It comes on 135m spools and in many colours and costs £3-4 per spools. These are also shipped from China, but again is worth the wait as the quality and price is great. This is the type of cord I used to make my macrame rose and tulip.

Moving on to micro macrame, I also have a few different cords and threads that I like to use. The first one is s-lon/c-lon cord that is very commonly used for micro macrame. A great place to buy these are from eBay as they can be bought in packs of a selection of colours at a cheaper price than buying them individually, but these cords are available from many jewellery supply shops such as The Crystal Phoenix which is great if you want to only get a few selected colours of this cord. They have a pretty wide selection and the prices are decent with good delivery options. They also stock plenty of other jewellery making goodies.

Another type of thread I like to use for micro macrame is a Chinese nylon thread. I like to use this for certain projects all depending on the look I want my piece to have. I also buy some of these when I am back home visiting the wholesale shop, but I have gotten most of this thread from Jewellery Maker as the prices are great on them, and that is where I first discovered the thread. They are sometimes sold in bundles which makes the value brilliant, and therefore I will often use this thread to experiment with my designs to find out if something will work or not and it is so cost effective.
